Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer and accounts for the largest number of cancer-related deaths in women in Europe. It’s expected that in the future, significantly more women will be affected by this disease.
History
We set up the foundation in March 2007, as an NGO registered with the public registry. The committee started out with four members and later, more members came forward with an interest in joining the team. Today we are proud to have Helen Muscat as Chairperson , Esther Sant as Co-Founder and Secretary, Betty Lee, Sarah Cardona, Jenny Oakley and Dr Noel Buttigieg Scicluna serving on the committee.
Our work
Our foundation works hard lobbying for better services and treatment for breast cancer patients and we are proud of our achievements to date.
- We presented a 5000-signature petition in parliament to the Minister of Health and the Elderly, Hon. Dr. Joseph Cassar and to Hon. Justine Caruana.
- We donated equipment to the Multidisciplinary team at Mater Dei Hospital, namely a biopsy gun and a state-of-the-art microscope incorporating a digital camera and an LCD screen. Its use is not only diagnostic but also serves as a teaching tool for medical students.
- We organise breast awareness courses for health care professionals and corporate staff as part of our development program.
- On the 9th February 2011, we sponsored a seminar at the Westin Dragonara Resort entitled ‘Empowering Family Doctors: National Breast Screening’. This seminar was aimed to strengthen the link between the client being invited for breast screening and her family doctor.
- We are working on obtaining our own premises where we can have meetings and offer our services in a more professional environment.
- We are continuously evolving and with the efforts of all members of the committee, ABCF prompted the change in the breast cancer policy and plan in the Maltese Islands and will continue to firmly support and cooperate with all stakeholders.
