About Us

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer and accounts for the largest number of cancer-related deaths in women in Europe. It’s expected that in the future, significantly more women will be affected by this disease.

Our History

We set up the foundation in March 2007, as an NGO registered with the public registry. The committee started out with four members and later, more members came forward with an interest in joining the team. Today we are proud to have Esther Sant as Chairperson, Betty Lee, Sarah Cardona, Jenny Oakley, Dr Noel Buttigieg Scicluna and Laura Sammut serving on the committee.

The Foundation

Action for Breast Cancer Foundation is a Voluntary Organisation that’s campaigning for a quality assured service in order to diagnose and treat breast cancer in Malta and Gozo. This initiative includes a screening programme; early detection can lead to more effective treatment and can, therefore, save many more lives. The foundation is registered with the Commission of Voluntary Organisation with VO/0058. Also the foundation is registered as a legal person LPF – 42.

Our Work

Our foundation works hard lobbying for better services and treatment for breast cancer patients and we are proud of our achievements to date.

  • 01

We presented a 5000-signature petition in parliament to the Minister of Health and the Elderly, Hon. Dr. Joseph Cassar and to Hon. Justine Caruana.

  • 02

We donated equipment to the Multidisciplinary team at Mater Dei Hospital, namely a biopsy gun and a state-of-the-art microscope incorporating a digital camera and an LCD screen. Its use is not only diagnostic but also serves as a teaching tool for medical students.

  • 03

We donated a gamma probe to help better surgical diagnostic technique while taking lymph node samples and a tatoo machine to improve the cosmetic outcome of breast re-construction surgery.

  • 04

We organise breast awareness courses for health care professionals and corporate staff as part of our development program.

  • 05

Through funding obtained by the Malta Airport Life Cycle Challenge 2013, 55,000 Euros were given to Mr. Shawn Baldachino to complete a PhD. This study will lead to a better understanding of breast cancer progression and potentially lead to better treatment options.

"The only person who can save you is you. That was going to be the thing that informed the rest of my Life"

The Future

We are continuously evolving and with the efforts of all members of the committee, ABCF prompted the change in the breast cancer policy and plan in the Maltese Islands and will continue to firmly support and cooperate with all stakeholders.

We will continue to organise awareness courses for both individuals and heath care professionals alike to strengthen everyone's awareness on the danger of cancer and it's repurcussios on yourself and your loved ones.
