This information may answer some of the questions you may have about practicalities about breast cancer care and therapy in The Maltese Islands.

If you find anything suspicious go to your family doctor.You may be referred for a mammogram. This is similar to an x-ray.

If the results indicate a lump, then you may be asked to book an appointment with a surgeon, who may perform a biopsy under local anaesthetic. For this procedure, you will not usually be required to stay in hospital overnight.

The results of the biopsy will indicate the course of treatment required. If surgery is required, then this can be performed at Mater Dei hospital with support from the Breast Care nurses.

Depending on the outcome, you may be referred to an oncologist at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital for hormone therapy, radiotherapy, chemo therapy or a combination.
